Food production: Aquaculture case study
There must be an analysis of the sustainability (or lack thereof) of food production. The majority of the seafood comes from South and Southeast Asia produced through a system called aquaculture.
Aquaculture, similar to agriculture, is the farming of fish (typically genetically modified) to mass produce seafood. Fish, cheaper than red meats, is usually the primary source for many impoverished countries-especially in Asia and Africa.
However, current practices of aquaculture are not only unsustainable but also terrible for the environment. There is no universal regulatory framework for dealing with aquaculture, thus the production is not completely safe nor clean. Many genetically modified organisms escape the farms and can potentially serve as a threat to natural habitats and normal food chains.
So how does Global Warming interact with aquaculture. According to ocean-climate.org, aquaculture reached a record high of 90.4 million tonnes of seafood produced in 2012. Climate change will directly affect production: rising sea levels as well as warming of the water affec t many species negatively, displacing some of their original environments. Thus, in order to meet demand, the aquaculture business will turn to more production rather than concerns of sustainability.
We must have an established framework for global aquaculture. This will benefit in two fold: (1) practices will be sustainable and countries will be held accountable to a certain environmental standard (2) global data can be calculated to estimate quantifiable data such as the impact of climate change on aquaculture production.
