Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Vegetarianism

During the summer I made the decision to become a vegetarian. This choice was for ethical reasons and not entirely because it's more sustainable. Looking at this decision from an economic standpoint being a vegetarian is extremely beneficial. Going to the farmer's markets and purchasing locally grown seasonal fruits and veggies is cheaper than purchasing a steak at the nearest grocery store. I wish information about this topic was more accessible to people all over so we could be more aware of the food we put into our body and its effect on the environment.

I would totally become a vegetarianism but giving up meat would be so hard for me and my family. Meat is very expensive and it is way cheaper to buy vegetables. How hard was it to become a vegetarian?

I think that be vegetarian or vegan is very hard, in my case my family taught me since i was a child that we must eat meat, legumes, fish, vegetables, fruit... All of food's categories because it is necessary for us to get different nutrients.
I don“t know if only eat vegetables, or fruit you're mistreating your body. Maybe yes, maybe no, I don't know, but if one day I decide be vegan, previously I will go to the doctor to inform me of any health risk.
If I were vegan i would be sad because I love for example, cheese, yogurts, ham.. And for me would be impossible to live without that.
Maybe if you consume less meat you aid to pollute less, but I believe that directly not consume meat is not good, I mean, you can consume meat or fish, but if you want pollute less, you can eat this less.
All of the ways, the nutrition It depends on each, and also depends on the body.

Vegetarianism is definately a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but even if you are cutting meat out of your diet, you can still eat processed foods that contribute to that footprint. So, it is imperative to watch how many processed foods you are consuming as well. Commenting on the comment above, vegetarianism or veganism isn't necessarily going to be bad for your health, yes, it may be harder to find protein to put in your diet, but it is not entirely impossible. If you watch what foods you are eating and how much protein you are getting everyday there will be no consequences assuming you have no health complications.
