Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Wasting food.

My family is guilty of wasting a lot of food yearly because we will cook a big meal one night and we save the leftovers but then we have so many things going on that we forget about that food in the fridge and it just sits in there for a week and then it will usually have mold on it at that point and we have to throw it out but now we will be more conscious on what we throw out and actually eating leftovers.

Hi lexie-f! I see your problem because also to my house we are guilty of wasting food. My mother always cook too much food but the next day she tries to save the leftovers. For example, when we eat potateos but we don't finish all, my mother reuse them to make a soup or others meals. Sometimes unfortunately the leftovers remain in the fridge too many days beacuse we say "we eat them tomorrow" and than when we want to eat this leftover we have to throw them away becase they are no more good to eat.
To solve this problem we try to cook the right amount of food and lately it works.
Have a try, certainly you can do it!

I totally can relate to you. The number of times this has happened in my family is countless. We have all been pitching in to reduce this problem by cooking less and trying to finish our food. We also try to eat all our leftovers before we make new food. Which I know it's hard because I personally hate eating things two days in a row, but it's worth it.

I'll bet everyone has this issue who cooks at home.  I have an idea! How about we make Wednesday "leftover day."  Every Wednesday, we take out all the leftover food in the fridge and use it in a meal.  Not only will this prevent the issue with wasting food, it can also make us better cooks, since we might need to be creative to combine this or that into a new dish to prepare.

For example, we like to take leftover rice and quinoa and lentils or whatever and combine them to make vegetable patties.
