Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Even small choices like what you chose to eat can have an effect on your carbon footprint. Changing your diet can drastically reduce the amount of carbon emission you produce per year. The majority of food is transported around the world. To reduce the amount of emission let off buy food you can try buying local, growing your own food or, eating less meat. If you buy local foods it can reduce the amount of miles it had to travel, causing less emission. By growing your own food it causes little to no emission at all. Livestock causes 20% to 50% of green house emission per year. If you cut red meats out of your diet you can reduce the amount of emission you contribute to.
A good and effective food policy would be limiting the amount of miles food can travel. By setting a limit less emission can be caused in transporting food alone. However, for some places food importing is necessary. Islands for example may not be able to grow the food they need and, depend on food  importation to survive. More populated areas don't necessarily need food to be imported or, can find a clo ser location to receive their food from. By setting this policy it would prevent unnecessary food transportation and decrease the amount of emission it emits.
