Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

We live in a world which suffers from pollution animal cruelty, and drought. These are just some of the issues caused by the meat industry. With a rapidly growing population and a deteriorating planet, meat consumption will not sustain the future generations. We need a reasonable and achievable solution to this crisis. Humans need protein, but we can’t continue harvesting it with today’s methods. Some may ask, “how can I get proper amounts of protein with all meat stripped from my diet?” The answer is simple, and has been sitting in front of us for centuries. Insects are the future. Those good for nothing bugs actually are stocked full of vitamins that will power our bodies just like a hamburger. As the respected science website iflscience.com states, “high fat, protein, vitamin, fiber and mineral content that is often comparable to fish or livestock.” Bug production is cheap, sustainable, healthy, cruelty free, and eco friendly. Start the movement.

I think that going vegetarian for a couple of meals a week would be beyond helpful for the environment. Preparing meat and sending it to stores makes a lot of waste and does not help the environment. Fossil fuel-based energy is the main factor of human greenhouse gas emissions it is responsible for about 60%, then deforestation at about 18%, and animal agriculture comes in between 14% and 18%. This may not seem like very much, however, we can prevent this by minimizing the amount of meat you eat a night.
