Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

What do you think of GMO's?

peel_v-m

There are many companies and scientists looking into genetically modified food (GMO) hoping to make food more easily produced and accessible. However, do you think it is good to eat food that has been modified through genetics rather than food grown on a farm? Do you think that food should be produced in factories rather than crops? So what do you think of this?

I've done some research into GMOs. Genetically modified foods are becoming more prevalent - in fact, most crops grown today are GMO. Some of the pros include resistance to disease, which could lead to higher crop yield and feed more people. Also, genetically modified foods have better quality and hold more nutrition. Some of the cons are environmental damage - if a plant or animal is raised in environmental conditions that normally would not support them, it runs the risk of damaging that environment. GMO foods also take just as long to grow and mature as non-GMO, and can cause more allergic reactions. In short, GMO crops can feed more people and give them nutrients, but can also be destructive to the environment. Since GMO testing is still in its prime and there have been few long-term studies, I think we will have to wait until more testing is done to see the long term effects.
