Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger

When I calculated my carbon footprint, I found that the food I eat was above average in the amount and calorie level. I didn't like this statistic and I wanted to be healthier. What I've found since thinking about eating healthier in my own home is that eating healthy or simply just less is easier than it seems. One thing is to always have healthy stuff in the house (Tangerines, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries). This stuff is tasty and eat's easy to just grab and eat. Sometimes there just isn't any fruit or anything healthy in my house so I go back to the unhealthy stuff, but if I had fruit in more often I'd eat it. Another thing in regards to portion control, is to make snacks on smaller plates/bowls. I eat cereal a lot as a snack and I use these big bowls, but when I use a smaller bowl I cut down on half the calories and it still feels like the same meal. Just using smaller plates, and smaller amounts of stuff can cut down on calories a lot.
