Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Reducing Green House Gas Emissions by eating locally

ethandrivelesser

Foods carbon footprint is known as "Green House Gas Emissions" caused by farming, raising, transporting, storing, cooking and disposing of food. Being a teenage boy I know that I consume large amounts of meat. A meat lover has the highest carbon footprint at 3.3 tons of greenhouse emissions where as a vegan diet has the lowest which is at 1.5 tons. From reading I realized that I could cut my carbon footprint by 25% just by reducing the amount of red meat that I consume. Where most of the meat I consume comes from factory farms. These farms raise their animals in terrible conditions. These factory farms are also heavy polluters and the meat they produce can contain dangerous superbugs. I am going to try to use some plant based protein to slightly cut down on my intake of red meat. Also by shopping locally you can reduce pollution due to transportation of not only yourself but of the products that you are eating. The Hunger Project works to teach sustainable farming to rural villages in other countries increasing their self reliance. Sustainable farming has less of an impa ct on the environment and provides food and income to developing areas. A good policy to try to alleviate hunger would be to provide education on farming and other ways to be able to be self reliant using the resources that are present in their community.

I think that is a very important tip that many people should follow but don’t. I have grown up eating locally sourced food but many children and adults worldwide do not have the same access to locally sourced food. Many people also do not understand the importance of eating locally because they are not aware of the long lasting danger and effect the harmful gasses will have on our environment. Even though eating locally may seem like a small task it will help reduce our population's footprint because overtime the out of state or even out of country farmers who are importing their food to us will get the message that we would rather eat locally sourced food. 94% of the full process of getting non-local foods into the stores is burning unnecessary fossil fuels and releasing the gasses into our air and slowly deteriorating our environment. 83% of total CO2 emission in the world comes from food production. The amount of gases we release by not eating locally and organically can truly harm our earth and soon deplete our population.
Changing your diet could help reduce the ca rbon footprint of your food:
Eliminating waste by eating what you buy — 25%
Going vegan — 25%
Eating in-season, while avoiding hothouses and air freight — 10%
Recycling and avoiding excessive packaging — 6%
Reducing waste by buying items from the front of the shelves, reduced-price items, and misshapen fruit and vegetables — 2%
Cooking using less energy— 5%
