Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Buying Food

killak_simone3

When people go to the grocery store to buy food, there is a good chance that they buy more food than they are going to eat.  This food is then brought home and then stored.  The food we don't need goes bad and we throw it away.  This extra food and money that is wasted could go to people who really need it and are malnourished.  If we bought just what we needed to eat to survive, there would be so much more food in the world.  When we put too much food on our plates, we end up throwing them away instead of saving it for later.
