Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Eat it no matter what!

We should try to eat food regardless of appearance. While there are many companies that help with the distribution of “ugly” food, I believe that we should try and eat food, even if it is misshapen

I think this is very interesting. I think usually stores sell the most attractive food because it's appealing to the eyes and will attract more customers the better and more fresh the food looks. But we should not waste the extra food. We have things we can do with the food that is not always sold in stores. For example maybe we can use it in soup kitchens and use it to feed the homeless; give it to food banks, transport it to areas of famine etc.

I eat very little food as it is (one or two meals a day during the week) but I always eat what is left over before making something new. If everyone did this, their numbers may be lower (eating leftovers, not my poor eating habits). Also, having people over for dinner is a better way to have large meals without so much waste, as well as use it as an opportunity to meet with people in ways to improve carbon footprints.

I agree with your point that we have to eat the food regardless, because out there, there are children who have nothing or the bare minimum to eat because of their situation that is going where they live. Just for the sake of us showing respect for those who are less fortunate than us. Somewhere in the world there’s a family who would love to eat the food that you don’t want to eat and could very much feed their whole family.

I think the food that we eat can sometimes harm us. I like to try to stay away from the processed foods and GMO foods. I think we should not extra food and that we should save our leftovers and eat them another time. I think that food canned foods that we are not going to eat and not expired we should give to homeless shelters to feed the homeless.

I agree food should not be wasted, and eaten regardless its form. This is important because there is people that can't afford, or don't have the resources to meals daily. And for us just to waist the food we have, is a "crime". As people had said it does show respect to what your eating, who made it and people who can't have it as easily.

I agree that food should not be thrown away just because it's appearance isn't perfect. They probably taste the same  but may have a bruise or two or the might be a little off coloured. If there was something we could do with the wasted food thrown away by grocery stores on a global scale, everyones global average of food waste would go down drastically.
