Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

How To Keep Food Longer

Gracie_D

My family is pretty good about left overs and not throwing food away until it is necessary.  But sometimes we are guilty of not liking or jut not wanting to finish it and throwing it away. No we are trying to cut down on our food waste and use all that we can.  One way that we do that is we found out that you can often times use food past the expiration date if it hasn't been opened or if it is something that doesn't go bad easily.

it's true that some kinds of food past the expiration date can still be good, but be careful not to take this too far, Gracie!

in my opinion do not use the food which over its expiry date even it is good or not. it will cause serious health issues and all. better to avoid it. in my own business of [kumarakom houseboat](https://www.myhouseboats.com/Kumarakom-Houseboats) i didnt allow such like foods to my clients.

Personnally, I eat food after its expiry date because it is still eatable and as good as if you just bought it. But I think one month is enought.

I agree we should eat our leftovers but we should also reduce the exact amount of food we make and maybe that will cut down the amount of leftovers we have.

I think that eating nowadays food injected with all kinds of poisonous  substances is enough  dangerous for our health we should not eat expired food

i don`t think that we should eat food past the expiration date but i agree that there are some kinds of food that we can still eat even past the experation date.
I personally do not recommend you to eat that kind of food because of the health problems.

Maybe you can just buy food that you know your gonna eat, instead of buying food that your not gonna want later.

It is great that your family tries to finish everything but you should not feel guilty if you just can't eat anymore of it. What you can do instead of throwing away the food scraps is composting. Find a small place in your backyard to start a compost pile, this way you can dispose of your leftover scraps and not feel guilty because you know that it is decomposing and helping our planet. I don't think that it is the best idea to eat food past its expiration date because there is always a chance it will make you sick. MAybe your family can start a vegetable patch in your backyard so that you will have healthy options and you are growing it yourself instead of driving to the grocery store which will also reduce your carbon footprint.
