What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food & Hunger
While one person lying on the sofa "dies" from overeating other starves to death in fact.
A few days ago I read in the media that the number of hungry people has increased considerably in recent years: in 1990 there were about 822 million in 2008 - about 963 million people, 19 June 2009 BBC made an official statement, according to which the number of hungry people has reached 1 billion and the number of these people rose up to this point. It is about one-seventh of the population of our planet. Every year from hunger kills about 8.8 million people, mostly children, which gives the ratio: one death every three seconds. And it's really sad. There is a risk that due to such problems can start numerous group of the uprising, which can lead to wars. We don't need this. I think that everyone wants to live in harmony with oneself and the world.
How to correct this situation? Easily!
First of all, you can donate food. There are organizations that accept donations of this kind. Then they distribute the products as needs. Secondly, you can become not only a sponsor of such organi zations and take part in the delivery. Thus you can still have a psychological support. You can invest the money, etc.
We must do good, and it will come back like a boomerang ![]()
I definitely agree with you. There are so many people who are dying from hunger every day. It is really sad to know that on June 19, 2009, BBC made an official statement that the number of hungry people reached 1 billion. I think your idea of donating food is a really great idea. There are a couple of restaurants near my house that give out their leftover food to different food banks. This is really helpful to the community because food that is perfectly edible is not going to the waste and instead, it is benefiting many people who are hungry. If restaurants do not directly give their leftover food to food banks, another way of collecting free food is by directly going to restaurants and asking if they have any leftover food. I have tried this many times and it is a great way to connect with your community and help out people who are in need of food.
I completely agree with you. Before I started volunteering at my local food bank, I was not aware of how privileged I am to be able to have three meals a day, and to have a kitchen filled with food. Once I started volunteering I actually started to realize and notice how desperate some people are for food to feed themselves and their families. Now that I’ve volunteered for a while, it feels so good to be able to help and make someone else’s life better even though I know I’m not supporting and saving every hungry person on this earth. There are many ways we can try to help the people in need. Even if there is nothing we can do to help people who are starving, we have to at least do our part as respectful humans, to not waste food and make responsible decisions. Without noticing, hundreds and thousands of people are actually suffering and dying of starvation. Some people don’t even know when their next meal is, while we are fortunate enough to know that we will have a meal in the morning, afternoon and night. According to the United Nations, 836 million people still live in extreme poverty, meaning that they cannot afford food.
We need to make responsible choices. If you know you will not be able to finish something, make sure find something else to eat, don’t eat a little bit and throw it straight to the trash. First that is a waste of food, but that is also affecting our planet because more and more trash will be generated and sooner or later we will have no space to store all that trash. Trash is partly responsible for the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as global warming. We all are able to make a change.
I agree with you too. It is also interesting how much huger is in the world. I don't think alot of people think about the numbers all they know is there is hunger. I think the idea of donating food is a smart idea, I would also go to places like food banks and homeless shelter that pass out food to help with the problem of hunger in the world. One-seventh of the population is a huge number and there are even more people that might not be starving but need the food because the don't have the funds to but more healthy foods for their families.
