Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger

About 12.9% of the world is undernourished, this is about 1 in 8 people in developing countries. Many people around the world struggle with being hungry on a daily basis. Those of us that are lucky enough to have food on our plates should respect it and not waste it. We should use it to its full extent. For my carbon footprint I was not too far above the local range in the food category. This is because my family tries to buy organic and locally grown food. I also believe that a way to try to limit the amount of food we buy from outside of the surrounding states, as it is expensive and harmful for our environment. Shipping food uses a lot of fuel causing it to emit CO2. The extent of packaging is not biodegradable, making it bad for the environment. I will change this carbon footprint by trying to eat locally and always eat everything that I can, not wasting lots of my food. Also I will try to donate to food banks whenever I can to help those that are not are thankful as I am to have food available to me.

I completely agree with you. I think that it is crucial for us to understand that there are not many people as fortunate as us around the world, Hundreds and Thousands of people live in poverty everyday, and when people live in poverty, that means that they cannot afford food. I understand how hard it is to pay attention to what we eat and make sure we are not wasting food, but I feel like we should put more of an effort to think about the people starving to death.
$218 billion worth of food is thrown away each year and yet there are people living in hunger. We need to make an effort to not waste food because it is unfair on the people who would actually love to eat the food we are throwing out. From this discussion post I have come to my senses and realized a lot of things. I think the fact that so many people are craving for food but yet some people are wasting food everyday shocks me. I know that from today on, I will pay extra attention and try to make a chan ge.

You are right. Most people in the world are starving while the people who do have food sometimes waste or are not thankful for the plate of food in front of them. Some people don't realize how lucky they are to have food. Tras how some people don't eat half of their food and waste the rest by throwing it away. People now should only take what they are going to eat. Less food eaten means more food for the starving. Also we should be focused on other ways to help the people who cannot afford the food. Buying less food will mean tht there may be some extra food for the people starving. Any way to help the starving could actually make a difference in how much humans are wasting today.

Ok, I get that ya'll are trying to do good and all, but this "there are children starving in Africa" is really starting to get to me. Yeah, of course people should be thankful that they have food to eat, but the fact that people are ignorant enough to compare what they have to someone who has less kind of annoys me.* Kylie L says "we should put more of an effort to think about the people starving to death." Take a second to think about what I am going to say. This quote bothers me because of the word "think." You can always "think" about people "starving to death," but should probably do something instead of just think about it.

*Sorry if this reply sounds mean. I am trying to criticize the "there are children starving in Africa" saying, but it may not have registered that way

I agree with you that we should take action. However, before we take action we must think of solutions. Roughly 2.5 billion people live in dry areas. The first steps we must take to prevent hunger is get these people closer to the coast or warm, more damp land where crops can be grown and fish can be caught. Countries like the United States have a vast majority of people living on the coast, and the land is utilized to grow an abundance of crops, making the U.S. an extremely prosperous country. Sadly, many other nations are not blessed with these geographical benefits and therefore suffer from hunger.

I wholly agree with your statement. Although some may say that being appreciative for what you have isn't enough, I actually think that it's a key step in being able to make a real difference. If we can't recognize our own privileges, there's no way that we can even begin to contribute to the needs of the underprivileged. Furthermore, the reality is, making significant on such a grand scale is extremely difficult, and those who believe that simply recognizing our own valuable opportunities is insufficient should be able to find ways to work together at discovering solutions to the issues that we have all created as members of the human race.

I completely agree with your statement and find it admirable that you strive to eat locally and organically in order to reduce your negative impact on the environment. Similarly, I agree that understanding the privilege we have and doing our best to appreciate that privilege is a key step in moving towards a world with less hunger. Many people do not recognize that they are lucky to have enough food to eat because people in poorer countries as well as in the US are starving. The first step in making a difference is recognizing that people like us have it a lot better than others and we have the ability to make an impact. Realizing that I could do better in terms of eating more wholesome, organic, and locally grown food makes me want to set goals for myself in terms of reducing my carbon emissions in this area.
