Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

After calculating my carbon footprint, that had surprised me, I became so aware that our dietary options actually affect our carbon emissions. An example is, organic food requires less carbon dioxide because it is modified less. On the other end, bio-genetically modified food releases more carbon dioxide due to the extra processes needed to fix the food. I never would have realized that our food options determine how much energy is used to produce all of them. That was what got me to now aware why eating cleaner and healthier food is important and that is because natural food growth promotes greater environmental positivity. Organic produce promotes the Earth’s environment because natural food growth gives nutrients back. I also think that it is a necessity that we pay attention to the destruction of our environment. The problem is through our meat industry, that is causing it, and we as a community need to find ways to prevent further destruction. It is probably unlikely that we can make many people transition into a vegan or vegetarian diet, but I believe that it is cr ucial more people understand the impacts. This is such an important topic today. At the end, maybe it is an unrealistic goal to have many people convert to a different diet, but I feel that people should become more aware of the frightening effects of the meat industry.
