What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

I am amazed by the statistics stating 1 in 7 people do not have enough to eat. I learned that my dietary choices are reckless and I should be more careful about wasting food. New policies on making effective use of wasted food can help provide for people without enough food.
These statistics don't surprise me much because at lots of westernized countries, public places (especially schools) tend to waste copious amounts of food. The school that I go to composts to reduce food waste, but there is still the dilemma of what if you can't finish your food, and you don't want to compost it because you have limited money to spend on lunch. A solution to this would be saving it and appreciating the fact that you have access to food by packing it up, but at my school (and probably most) that is not an option because containers are not accessible/distributed. A helpful solution to this would be carrying around reusable containers to store left over food in if you don't finish it at school. In this way, you're wasting less food and spending less money. In terms of helping others gain access to food, there are several organizations (such as free rice) where you help decrease world hunger in a way that is convenient for minors who can't travel places.

I agree with Venice that because these statistics don't surprise me because we waste a lot of food per week. U.S.News did a research to see how much a person waste in a single week and study's show that a U.S citizen usually waste about 25% of food bought, 25% does not seem like a lot but thats one fourth of your food. If we can reduce wasting food we can save money and our environment. We can use the left over food and put it into a container and just eat it another time. I do waste alot of food on a daily basis but I have changed my ways and I now do not waste as much as I used to. I can see the change that it has impacted my house hold because now we saved a lot more money and have double the amount of food.
I understand that some people are not as fortunate to eat food whenever they please. For this reason, I try to not take my food for granted. When I am at school I take home the food I do not eat and when I am at home we save the food we do not eat and use for leftovers. Also, trying to limit the amount of food we waste can help to lower our carbon footpritn. Lastly, I believe those who are lucky should strive to fill their bodies with the nutrients it needs to be able to conquer your day. Eating healthy is very important in keeping your body healthy. Eating various fruits and veggies allow you to get the much needed vitamins you need for your body to function properly. Protein from meat, milk, etc allows you to keep your body full of energy for long periods of time.
