What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger: How to Help
At my school, we are served breakfast, lunch, and even after school snacks. We are very privileged to have food as much as we do, because in other parts of the world, some people don't eat at all! The worst thing we can do is waste food or throw it away when we haven't even eaten it all. Help someone out by offering to give it to them. Also, make sure you know you'll eat all the food when it's given to you. It's the least we can do since so many people in this world are hungry and don't have quick and easy access to food. We are so grateful to not be starving and we can't take it for granted.
I agree with you Tori. We are very blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to be served food at school. We can't take it for granted and we need to make sure like you said to not throw any of it away or waste. Trying new foods is always a good thing but like you said, if you know your not going to like it don't even get it. The best you can do is give it to someone who does like it.
Yes, at school we are very privileged to be served at every meal of the day including breaks. Wasting food is a bad thing but our school offers a compost system where some food scraps are recycled and used in our own living lab. Even though we are wasting food which isn't a good thing we are recycling that food and using it to benefit our plants. If you check the website https://www.greenbiz.com/news/2013/09/1 … -countries it shows that ⅓ of the food being produced in the world is being thrown away and creates a carbon footprint bigger then all of the countries except China and the U.S. According to the Washington Post food waste makes up 7% of the global emissions (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/ene … 7fcf0d9329)
I agree with you, we are so lucky and privileged to have so much food and sometimes we have more food than we need. Students at my school are so lucky to be able to purchase breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Other people in the world are not as privileged and lucky as we are and miss breakfast, lunch, or dinner or they do not even eat until the next day. We should be careful what we eat and how much we serve ourselves on our plate so that we do not have to throw away any extra food. By saving food, we might give another person around the world a chance to eat something before they go to sleep. Another thing that we can do is help out and feed the poor. Students can get together as groups and help out to feed the homeless or centers for homeless people who need help.
I absolutely agree that we are very lucky and privileged to have the option of ready food for breakfast lunch and snacks at school. Although we as a community are very lucky, do you think helping on a small local level is making a big enough difference. Considering the fact that although we have a portion of communities all over the US that are starving how does it help the the much larger number of starving people in Africa or India? Do you believe that if the school some how made a program where for every lunch and breakfast that we purchase we can send a meal to someone in need, that we would make a larger scale difference?
I definitely agree with you Tori in that we are very fortunate and lucky to have meals prepared for us for almost every meal of the day. I think what you said about how we are wasteful, however, is very important because we should not be taking for granted something of which many people don't even have. Like today, an estimated 795 million people have to experience undernourishment, as they have no food. This is a very important issue that needs to be dealt with and fixed. Everyone should be able to have three meals a day like we do.
Yes I agree with all of you that we need to be more conservative with our food because when we eat at school we don’t really think about how lucky we are to be eating the food we get and sometimes it just goes to waste if we don't like the food we bought or if we just don't want it. We need to be more mindful of being wasteful with the food we are given because there are starving people in the world who wish they could have are hardly eaten chicken or some other stuff like it.
There is a website for us minors to contribute to ending world hunger without traveling: http://freerice.com <- It is an organization that provides places suffering from food scarcity with various nutritious food items such as grains, fruits, proteins, and vegetable crops (not just rice). This website allows people to learn about various topics (some that are taught in school, so it may be used as a study tool) while donating food to parts of the world that are not as fortunate as us to have every meal of the day prepared for them hot and fresh.
I agree that not enough people around the world have enough to live. We are very fortunate to have enough food to survive on, unlike many other countries and cities from around the world. As Mercy Corps says, 1 in every 9 people go to bed hungry. Since we have enough food we need to do more to share with others. When you go out to buy groceries, make sure that you are only buying what you will use. Make sure not to purchase so much food that you end up throwing half of it away because it goes moldy. If you are at a restaurant, take home your extra food and do not leave it for the restaurant to throw away.
Nice Tori I agree. We are very privileged at O'Dowd, I think giving food to people at our school is awesome. But I think what would a lot better would be to give out our leftover to homeless of impoverished men and woman in the area of our school.
