Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Is meat bad for the environment?

Where you buy your food, what you eat, and where you live all affect the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into our atmosphere. Eating meat causes more release of carbon dioxide into the air because of the energy used to process meat.
Studies in England showed that when people switched from a meat diet to a plant based and vegan diet, the amount of carbon dioxide dropped drastically. Total emissions could be reduced as much as 25% or more depending on what you substitute for meat.
Changing your diet could help the environment and the amount of carbon dioxide you release into the atmosphere. We can help the environment but we still need to make sure we take care of our bodies because if you live on an island, fish is your main source of food.

Another reason is the amount of food that we throw away and how we throw it away. For example, compostable food will be good for the environment because it will break down on its own, but garbage will be dumped into a landfill , which causes more release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Eating a plant based diet can be good all around. You can eat healthy fresh foods instead of processed foods, and the amount of carbon dioxide will be lower because processing food consumes energy and increase carbon dioxide emissions.
By throwing away less food, we can also give that food to those who are less fortunate than us. We need to take care of our atmosphere and planet because it will be become worse if we don’t change how we view things and how we care for our environment.
