Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Vegetarianism is the way to go

tatjanabevineau

Hi Im Tatjana-
I am a vegetarian and I want to share that it is such a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. One of the reasons I became vegetarian is because I noticed that meat is a big part of the reason why CO2 is in the air. Meat production releases a lot of toxins that are bad for the atmosphere. Also, I decided to become vegetarian because it is a healthier way to eat and since I have became a vegetarian, I have felt so much healthier than I did when I ate meat. I noticed that when I went through my carbon footprint calculator results, my food section was very small in comparison to a lot of my other classmates because me not eating meat lowers the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.
In conclusion, I would recommend becoming vegetarian if you really want to lower your carbon footprint because it helps the earth, but you benefit as well.

In comparison to your lifestyle, I eat a lot of meat.  Due to this, my carbon footprint in the food section was higher than many of my classmates, and extremely higher than my vegetarian classmates.  This opened my eyes on how the meat industry is very harmful to the earth.  Surprisingly, an article published in 2014 by the Guardian, said that a study at Bard College found that not eating red meat would reduce your carbon footprint more than not driving.  I was amazed at this study because I never thought that red meat could have such a profound impact on the environment.  Although I cannot ever see myself going vegan or vegetarian, this study has made me consider not eating red mean anymore.
