Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Eating at a lower trophic level

kristenhe

Globally, there are about 795 million people do not have access to food for survive, and 66 million of these people are children. Since hunger affects so many people in the world, what can we do to help them? In my APES class, we learned a concept called "eating at a lower trophic level", which basically means that eating more vegetable rather than meat. It has several benefits. For example, it takes less energy to produce vegetable, and people can gain more energy from it because there is less energy loss. Therefore, more people would be supported on Earth. However, I don't think eating at a lower trophic level mean to be vegetarianism, because human body also need proteins and other stuff to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. It just call for people to eat more vegetable, which is not only good for the environment but also help the problem of food and hunger.
