What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Donate and Don't Waste
According to the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization), 925 million people on the Earth do not have enough food to eat. Think about how much is eaten on a daily basis. There are the three meals of the day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, on top of that, more than enough snacks and candy are consumed in between those times. Many people do not have access to even three meals a day, much less something to snack on. There are leftovers, practically all the time, and extra food in the pantry. Of course, there are times when we are hungry, but not in a ravenous way. We don't have to worry about if we are going to have enough food on the table that night, or if there even is going to be food. We buy food that we may never eat at the grocery store. Don't trash extra food, and let it go to waste! Don't let something that you will never use sit in the pantry for eternity! You can donate to places such as local food banks. Or, there are several food charities that you can give to.
You have a point here and I want to add the fact that there are other downsides of this waste of food. While in a part of the world, where starvation is a common issue, people are not working, they have to face numerous diseases which are often generated by the lack of healthy food, others, in the so-called "civilized" society, don't care about what is actually happening around the world. In addition, our greed is what keeps away people from helping, because as long as we have something to eat, it doesn't matter whether there are still poor humans with nothing to calm their hunger. Apart from this fact, the rate of obese people has alarmantly increased over the past years, all caused by the junk food, the street food that tastes so good, but contains a huge amount of harmful chemicals.
It is very true that the United States has enough food for everyone for at least three meals a day. However, there is so much food that is wasted from every one of those meals. There are at least 38 million tons of food wasted per year in the USA because of poor meal choices and purchases. This country's citizens can help solve this major problem if they took the time to look in their refrigerators and pantries for missing or extra food items. People in the United States can help themselves by having more efficient food preparation, storage, and planning. If each person consciously makes the effort to get necessary amounts of food, there would be so much less food waste. Reducing food waste has many good effects, such as reducing carbon footprints, saving money, reducing pollution, and providing more food for the less fortunate.

I think in the US, we have a problem with buying too much food and not finishing a majority of it. This is apparent when buying groceries, eating out, etc. I also feel like there aren’t enough places to drop off unwanted and opened food unless you go to a food bank which some people don’t want to go out of their way and do. I think that there should be more opportunities in our community to donate food. If people buy less food at grocery stores, then the stores may stop providing so much. This would help contribute to less food wasted and hopefully more food for people in needed it.
Adding onto Fiona’s idea, I feel that it is important that as a community we have to convey/teach people about food waste. After teaching people about food waste, we need to take action and do something about it and not stop after we spread the word, keep going and striving for the best end result.
To add on to what Fiona said, I like what you said, but disagree when you said "We" as if you were speaking for the U.S. I do not waste a lot, and I bet a lot of other people aere just like me. I get your point though.
I see your point too Sam,, but I often also use "we" when talking about the USA even if I feel and behave differently from the average person. There is a usefulness in taking some responsibility for the society at large.
This is so true, even I along with many other people, we all end up wasting a lot of food. An example of this could be going to a restaurant, getting a big entree and not finishing it. Then most likely, the restaurant throws away the food.
This is a real problem that with little efort we can all make a big change. When you ordeer food or make food for yourself, only order/make the amont of food that you will eat.
yup
