What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste
The United States is the leading country in wasted food. The amount of food wasted in our country and the number of hungry people in our country is disproportionate. I believe that the culture around wasting food needs to change. Composting food is also very important, yet it is not nearly as normalized as it should be. Wasting food is a large contributor to Americans carbon footprints.
I agree that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. 50% of all produce in the United States is thrown away. There are many people who struggle to attain food in the first place. The amount of all food grown that is wasted is valued at 3 trillion dollars. Not only is it a waste of money, but it adds to out carbon footprints. There are lots of ways to reduce food waste that everyone should be aware of besides composting. An easy way is to store and eat leftovers. You can also donate to food banks. When you go to the grocery store, make sure you have a list so that you don't buy excess food. I have noticed that when I go to the store hungry, I always want to buy lots of food that I don't really need. It is important to go food shopping after you have eaten so this doesn't happen. In conclusion, food waste is a major issue, but luckily there are many things you can do to reduce it.
I agree with the statement which has been made, and I believe that food can be composted when required. It is true that many people have the ability to compost, or to ration food, but they either choose not to do it or simply don't do it enough. I believe that we can cut back on wasted food, but composting food will only be part of the solution as we would have to find better ways of producing food and distributing food to the country.
I agree with what was said about composting not being normalized. I am from New York and it is not very common to compost anything. Everything either goes in the trash or recycling. Recycling is good, but not everything can be recycled, which is why compost is very necessary. I came to California where compost is very normal and very encouraged. I believe compost should be something that is normalized everywhere, because it makes for less waste and helps the environment by providing fertilizer.
