What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Starvation and Food Waste
40% of food in the U.S. is thrown out every year. In 2012, the amount of food discarded in the U.S. would be able to feed 190 million adults every day for the entire year. The U.S. wastes more food than any other country, yet 1 in 6 Americans face hunger. Grocery store customers avoid produce with brown spots or squishy areas, the store then has to throw away the food that doesn't sell which eventually adds up to be a lot. I personally pick out the best looking foods, and others do too. And at home, I never choose foods in order of expiration date, I pick out what ever looks best. If we made little changes we could reduce the amount of food wasted.
- we should eat our leftovers, and not wait until they've gone bad and throw them away
- when in the grocery store, we should buy what we need, over shopping leads to more food in our dumpsters
- preserve foods that you know won't be eaten any time soon (store them in the freezer, or pickle them)
- Also, you can don ate food you know you're not going to use
All of these tips can help Americans reduce the amount of food we waste, and maybe lead to less starvation and hunger.
Wow I never really thought about how I pick out food and what happens when it goes to waste. America leads the way for most food thrown away annually. The largest occupant in landfills in the U.S. is wasted food. Recalling past experiences, I now remember always looking for the best looking food item. Fruits and vegetables tend to have bruised spots and mold if not bought quick enough. The average American customer probably won't buy a discolored fruit or vegetable if there is perfect-looking fruit or vegetable option. While people choose the best-looking foods, other food go to waste as they are thrown out. According to studies, the average American family of four throws out about $1,600 worth of food annually. All of that wasted food could have been put to use for some purpose. Other countries are already taking action to cut down on the amount of food wasted. For example, France does not allow grocery stores to throw away foods. Instead, grocery stores must compost or donate unsold and expiring foods. If we can take action like this, then less food would get thrown aw ay. While food is getting wasted, people in America are starving. About 49 million Americans have trouble putting food on the table. Instead of throwing away food, we should donate it to cut down those numbers of struggling Americans. Less food thrown away equals less hunger and starvation.
