What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

The world as vegans
Meat is a large part of any person's diet, so much so that the average person eats about 270lbs of meat in a year. If the world went vegan, the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere due to meat production would be eliminated. Meat production produces 11 times more greenhouse gases then fruit and vegetable production. The policy of the world as vegans would completely change the amount of carbon dioxide production and greatly decrease the world's carbon footprint. Additionally, if the world were vegans, then feeding the hungry would be easier because fruits and vegetables are cheaper to buy and produce than meat.
Even though it would be hard for the world to come together as vegans due to different necessities for different people, the solution could definitely help our planet because meat = huge amounts of carbon emission. It's wild to think that our planet could drastically change without the production of meat. I know it would be hard for many people to become vegans, but awesome solutions include reducing your meat intake and encouraging grass-fed cow movements because methane production from them is causing an overload of greenhouse gases.
I totally agree. I don't care for meat and I only really eat chicken. Not only is CO2 released because of meat production, but methane is produced from cows all the time as well. The negative effect on the climate of Methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2. Therefore the release of about 100 kg Methane per year for each cow is equivalent to about 2'300 kg CO2 per year. The average cow produces enough methane per year to do the same greenhouse damage as four tons of carbon dioxide. When people sit down and eat their meals no one is really thinking about how what they're eating is also affecting the planet they live on. Raising animals for food requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water and causes immense animal suffering. A staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, according to a report published by the Worldwatch Institute. Not eating meat can significantly change our environment. People say that we need change but then complain that they can't make change because things are too expensive, that they can't change how they live, that politicians won't change things, etc. But, this is one thing that if people care, they can do to really help our planet.
I agree that although it would be hard for people to become vegans if we can educate everyone on why it matters and the condition of the earth's atmosphere they would be more motivated to do it. The question is what to do if people have allergies to common vegan foods and so they don't have much to eat. Every idea goes through the design process which would fix issues that come up with this solution to the greenhouse effect. This fix overall can be hard to grasp and envision, but it would tremendously help the environment.
I agree that switching over to Vegan-ism would beneficial to the environment, but meat is rooted in the majority of the worlds lives. Throughout time, humans have grown and prospered because of their ability to obtain and cook meat. It would be very hard people to switch over, even if there was a catalyst for doing so.
Also growing plants and fruits could be very costly, and a contribute to GHG emissions and water consumptions. Take the almond for example. One almond, according to Business Insider, costs 1.6 gallons of water. Think about it. A tiny almond costs almost 2 gallons of water.
I kinda agree with you, but switching to vegan is not a viable plan. That would call for billions to change and millions to start protesting. I recognize how if we stop eating meat our carbon levels will drop by half, but with upcoming technology that may not be the case. Companies like IndieBio and Memphis Meats have just started to cultivate the meat in a petri dish. This one uses little to no carbon, and the only water they use is the water they put in the petri dish. It's not only eco-friendly, but it is also changing our way of domesticating cows to domesticating the cells of cows. I know it is a long shot, but its mostly likes tofu, except its meat, Though you don't kill a cow for it, instead of extract a very tiny portion of a cow. I can change the game of how we produce meat, and an ingenious plan to avoid everyone turning into vegans.
I agree that switching to vegan would be beneficial to the environment because it would tremendously help out the environment by not producing as much carbon into the air than meat. Also, it would be cheaper to have fruits and vegetables and last week when my mom went to buy 2 pieces of meat it cost her 25 dollars which if it was vegetables or fruit it would be way cheaper.
