What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!
Food & Hunger >
People Are Dying-Lets Do Something About It!
According to The Food Aid Foundation: http://www.foodaidfoundation.org/world- … stics.html
1 in 7 people are hungry, and about 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to live actively and or healthily. That is one-ninth of the people in the world. This number is far too large, and something needs to be done about it. I often hear classmates, including myself, say, "I'm starving!!" and I think it is important that we acknowledge that we are so privileged that we will probably never truly know what it feels like to be starving. As the more privileged population, I think that it is our responsibility to help those less fortunate. However, I also understand that we can't end world hunger in one day. The important thing is that we can all do little things to help our communities such as:
- Only buy the food that we know we will eat
- Throw out less food
- Buy less packaged food
- Give food to people in need when we have the opportunity
- Donat e and give to food kitchens
as well as other small actions that can really make a difference for the people in our communities.
I definitely agree. One in nine people are starving, and that is way too large of a number. According to https://www.cnn.com/2013/10/22/world/iyw-heifer-
international-pierre-ferrari/index.html 98 percent of people who are starving live in developing countries. Your point about donating to small actions really will make a difference because even if we don't end world hunger, we will make a change. According to https://www.usda.gov/oce/foodwaste/faqs.htm 133 billion pounds of food is wasted which translates into 165 billion dollars worth of food in America in 1 year. The fact that we are wasting this much food shows that we are squandering our resources and all that food is going to waste instead of the 795 million people. On average according to https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/.. … this-year, the average person eats 1,996 pounds a year. If you divide how much food AMERICA ALONE wastes a year by the average one person eats a year, you get 67,650,051. This represents the number of people America is potentially depriving of food. This goes back to your point of buying food we know we will eat. If we only buy the food we know we will eat, there will be minimal to no wasting of food. All this food that we end up saving that is untouched, will most likely go to a food bank, or a charity for starvation in the world.
I agree with both of you. People are too focused on how they can get what they want and they don't stop and look around at everyone they could be helping. According to WorldHunger.org https://www.worldhunger.org/2015-world- … tatistics/ 45% of all child death (in 2011) are because of malnutrition. Over 150 million children were stunted, and about 52 million children wasted (low weight for their age and height) in 2016. This is a huge problem that needs serious help.
