Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Mystery Meat

I usually eat a lot of meat during the week but I am willing the cut down on how much I eat in order to decrease my carbon footprint. The call for demand on beef (and other red meat) is so high that this then causes companies to produce more cows. Inevitably, the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases. This is because when a cow flagellates it lets out methane, and this excess amount of greenhouse gas per cow makes the earth much hotter. In addition, the amount of necessities a cow needs in order to survive is very large: water, grass, and land to live on. Therefore, in order to help the earth, I will eat less red meat and get protein from other foods such as tofu and beans.

Alex- This is a great idea. Another option for cutting down on your carbon footprint is going completely vegetarian once a week every month. This will help you stay consistent with your plan to consume less red meat. As I complete vegetarian I am able to get protein from sources other than meat like nuts and tofu which is why your suggestion of not eating as much meat is completely achievable.
