What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!
Food & Hunger >
Growing your own food
In a society, there are different policies on food. In my community, the majority of the people eat fresh produce and limit the amount of waste they produce. As well as that, since we live in the hills, there is a lot of plants and animals, like deer and raccoons that live there, and their waste creates healthy dirt to grow your own food. In my garden, I grow fresh tomatoes for salads and pasta sauce, artichokes, strawberries, lemons, basil, mint, carrots, squash, and much more. Not only will growing your own food decrease your carbon footprint, but it will make you healthier. I want to bring to the people who are less fortunate to grow their own food, I want to make little gardens all around where all people can come and take what they want. I think this will definitely effect the food and hunger world problem.
Maddy- I think that this is a great idea! However, it can be expensive for people in lower income areas to have access to fresh produce. Due to this lack of fresh produce and increased amount of fast food the obesity levels are constantly increasing. Thus, your garden idea would be a great way to bring affordable, fresh fruits and vegetables to people that do not have access to them.
