Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Being vegetarian is easier than you think

evelynveronica

I've been a vegetarian for a long time. It actually started from me being a picky eater as a child. But as I started to get older I realized how cruel the meat industry is. I also started to realize how bad the industry is for the environment. The only meat I eat now is chicken, and solely for getting protein, but I also try to get lots of my protein from plant based protein like in beans.

I agree. I am vegetarian as well and its not as hard as most would think. After you have stopped eating meat for a while it becomes normal and nothing goes through your mind when you see of get offered meat. The only struggle I have run into is being the guest and having to politely decline the offer.

being a vegetarian can be easy if you have access to other protein. you cannot, however, expect everyone else to go vegetarian, because it is expensive. It could also effect the economy of the USA and could cause a negative impact on the environment.

I'd love to know more about how people going vegetarian could negatively impact the environment- I've always heard the opposite!

I can see how it can effect the economy if there is a strong meat industry. However, I’ve recently been in a  conversation talking about how shopping local can help the environment and the economy. It helps the environment because there aren’t as many carbon emissions in the process of getting a product to you and it can help the local economy.

I also understand not everyone can afford to eat to help the environment. But if you have the privilege to, you should try your best to eat foods that dont negatively affect the environment
