Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

I learned a lot how what we eat can affect our carbon footprint. The land is ruined when we raise animals on it, and processing meat uses a ton of energy. So being vegetarian is definitely helping the environment. Also, the amount of food that we throw away is massive, so if we can reduce that number by giving the food to the people who really need it, we can not only help hungry people, but also reduce our carbon footprint.

I never really thought about how eating meat could affect my carbon footprint so much - it's really good that more and more people are starting to become vegetarians. I'm sure it's difficult for a lot of people (especially younger people) to be vegetarian but a lot of people can do it which is good.

I do eat a lot of meat and diary products, this really affects my carbon foot print but I like to eat these things, I shouldn’t start to try to eat other things instead of meat and dairy.

I've been vegetarian and dairy free for a few years and when I began it was for animal cruelty and simply because I wanted to but as I became more educated my reason for not eating these products became largely environmentally based. I think many don't know the affects of meat production on the environment or justify it without evidence. I think a lot of thrown away food could be put to better use based on the amount of people in need of food.
