Did you know that it takes 1043.75 times less water to get one kilogram of protein from crickets than cows? Cricket flour also provide 3 times as much protein as beef, so using the same amount of water, one could get 3131.25 times as much protein from crickets. Add to this the fact that crickets are many times easier to farm and sustain than cows, needing one kilo of feed to get a gram of cricket protein as opposed to 10 kilos for cow protein, and you have yourself an über-food. Additionally, crickets produce 80 times less methane than cows (which isn't strictly related to food and hunger but is a nice bonus) and are 2.3 more times protein efficient in terms of body mass. According to the American Council on Science and Health, crickets also have almost as much iron as beef. A small downside, but outweighed by the financial and economical upsides for sure.
I think that this is very fascinating, Peter! I think it's very interesting how much carbon and water is used for cow meat. However, I don't believe this is the best way for people to cut down on water usage. For one, people love meat, and cows are the jack of all trades for our diet. (Milk, cheese, steak, hamburgers, etc) On the flip side, crickets don't taste as good and aren't as useful as cows.
I do believe people should raise awareness to their diets and consume less dairy and meats, instead focusing on eating more locally-sourced vegetables. As nutriciously.com explains, a person who eats a vegan diet saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 sq ft of forested land, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent, and one animal’s life. I'm not saying that people should go vegan, but it certainly helps the environment.

I agree with your idea of eating crickets because it contains more protein than beef. It may be hard for some people to transition from eating beef to eating crickets, but if it became normalized, water usage would be much lower and there would be much less greenhouse gas from cows.
I applaud your novel idea Peter, and am interested to in learning more about insects as food, but what about lab grown beef, and also how do other insects compare? I think a fundamental issue we face as a society is breaking our bad eating habits, as "More than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity," according to the CDC. I think the root of this issue is the fact that food is necessary to our survival and the enormous misinformation that this sector has. My family recently watched a documentary on cows and the cattle industry, called Cowspiracy, and it was fascination to see that agriculture accounts for roughly 50% of global warming, whether through pollution of streams from fertilizer and poop runoff or from methane and other greenhouse gas emissions. This movie even has a website http://www.cowspiracy.com/ that helps spread information about how big agriculture is bad for the planet. I think it would be interesting to see if their is a potential new way of raising meat that could incorporate insects to help reduce waste and increase efficiency of protein per kilo of food given if you were to combine them.
I find this very interesting since this could really help lower the water we are using and help us have a better diet than we may already have, I have been trying to reduce the amount of meat that i eat slowly because of the amount of water that does go into the process of meat.
