What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

The Impossible Burger
In San Francisco, a restaurant has been recognized for its ability to make a veggie burger taste exactly like a beef burger. Not only does this burger taste like beef, it is better for the environment because the cows we use to make beef products produce methane, and when there is a higher demand for cows, the cows are bred causing methane to be released into the air. Cows produce over 100kg of methane a year. And through the newest innovation of the "Impossible Burger," produce like wheat, coconut oil, and potatoes, can be used as a healthier and more environmentally safe alternative.
That is awesome! I wonder why it taste so much like beef. I hope that in the near future we can do this for most meats. I think it would be much healthier for the environment and vegetarians/vegans would have more food options available for them. This is a great idea but I do have to admit, I love meat and I eat it almost everyday. If I can find a veggie burger that taste and looks like meat, I am all for it.
This is very interesting, but the only issue I see is that not many people enjoy veggie burgers. Not only is it the taste, but the texture is also off. Also there will most likely always be a high demand for meat. And if somehow a large quantity of people decide to go vegan, what are we going to do about the cows? They will just stay there farting methane into the air. And one more thing, what kinds of chemicals do they use in the burgers to get them to taste like meat?
I've heard of this. I personally don't like meat, but all of my friends who have tried it say they love it and it tastes just like meat. I think this is a great way to help the environment while not giving up things many people enjoy.
This is a great idea. I hope more restaurants can start doing this. It can help improve our environment in many ways.
This is super interesting! I wonder how they make it taste like meat. I like eating meat but I should definitely try it. It sounds much healthier and better for the environment.
This sounds very interesting, but I am skeptical about it. What is the imitation beef made up of? Will the texture be the same as real beef? Are the ingredients to make this imitation healthy to eat?
The ingredients of the impossible burger are natural, and plant derived: mainly Textured Wheat Protein, Coconut Oil, Potato Protein, and plant based Heme.
There's a similar product called the "Beyond Burger" that uses pea protein, plant oils, bamboo derived cellulose, potato starch and beet for color. It is soy free, gmo free, and gluten free.
I've eaten them both. They're very good, and the beyond burger in particular has an incredible meat-like texture. I've served it to meat eaters and every single one liked it and would have it again.
I live near San Fransisco, I should probably try it out soon!
Awesome! I just could never not have a beef burger, so one that tastes just like it would be great for me!
