Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food waste

Recently my mom, who works at a nonprofit organization, was trying to get food for an upcoming event they were holding. She asked a nearby bagel shop if they gave discounts for nonprofits. The shop said no, but that at the end of the day they give all the leftover bagels to any organization that requests them. The next day she came in the morning to get the bagels and they had two full trash bags full of bagels. Had they not been donated, all of that food would have been put in the trash. If food establishments adopt this policy by giving food to either nonprofit organizations or to homeless shelters, a lot of food can be saved and can go to a good cause.

That’s wonderful!  I attend high school and watch countless lunches, untouched or with only a few bites, thrown into the trash.

Thats a very good thing that places like panera donate food to homeless centers becasue they care about helping enviorment by not easting perfectly good food.
