Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Wasting food

shaynamaeg

My friends buy cafeteria school food for lunch. I noticed that some of my friends would grab their lunch and only eat half of it. They would toss the remaining food in the trash. I think its a problem because there's still enough food on the tray to feed others who are hungry. The trays of food are either left in the trash or shoved in the bushes. I've been guilty of throwing away good food but over time I've learned to be aware of how much food I'm throwing away and I think some should learn too.

I also think that wasting food is a big problem. There are people around the world that would do anything to get those food items you just threw away and people don't realize that. I think it might be beneficial to save up your old food item but not too long. People could give these items to foundations who could give them away.

I think that this is very helpful to people who waste food in their every day lives. This could help people understand how bad it is to waste food. There are very many people that are wishing for food in other places of the world, and you throwing away food is just like throwing away their dreams of having food. So this paragraph was a really good way of showing people how throwing away food could really impact someone's life.

I think that people should start portioning out food more. For instance when the cafeteria lady gives you food maybe you could say how much you want. Or at my old school, they kept food that people didn't eat(such as cartons milk, bananas, food in unopened packages) as long as it wasn't mac and cheese or something.

Just like @shaynamaeg, I see that everyday people get lunch from school and waste most of it. Whenever my brothers don't eat all of their food my mom always says remember the ones who are starving and each time that makes me want to give back. I believe schools should have a better way of using the tons of garbage being thrown out and everyone should have the mindset that not everyone is as fortunate as you are.

Just like @shaynameeg mentioned above, I have also noticed at my school that people get school lunch and often throw half of it away because they don't like it or are just really picky eaters. I personally find this incredibly terrible and horrifying for seeing the food other schools serve, I feel our school has the best school lunch there is in our area and people are still ungrateful for what they get and throw it away. Honestly, with vending machines and other options to buy good food around at my school to waste perfectly fine food that people say "they don't like" is despicable for they have options to get food they like or bring their own food. Although our school acknowledges and uses food waste put into the compost as compost in local gardens and other places, I feel it could be better utilized feeding people who don't have the resources to get food or don't have food. Ultimately people, specifically students in this case, should be more conscientious of w hat they want and don't want in terms of food so they can reduce their personal waste that could be going to much more deserving and hungry people.

I read an article about how France was introducing a new policy that required all restaurants and grocery stores (basically anywhere that sells food) to give their still edible food waste to the homeless of the country. I thought this was a genius idea to not only deal with the food waste problem, but also address the poverty and homelessness predicament. Even though I think this would be a hard thing to instate in countries, small steps like this could lead to a more efficient and less wasteful planet.
