Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Disposing Food

Food can often look displeasing even if there is nothing wrong with it. The expiration date isn’t always correct. You shouldn’t throw something away based on a date. Just check for mold or other signs of wear.

I agree if the food looks displeasing you should probably do what you said and check for signs of mold and wear, but also you could ask a parent, try a tiny bite, or if it's fine but just looks bad donate it. There isn't a need to throw away until you know for sure if it is bad or you don't have another choice.

I agree, Some things like bread or fruit don't always expire by the "Use by" date. Most of these things you can look at, taste, or smell it to see if it's expired. Throwing away food based on a date is a large waste. If the food looks okay, and it smells okay, there is no reason to throw it away. This is a waste of food, and there are so many other people in the world who would actually be willing to eat it.
