Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Wasting Food

With all the food in the world being produced in the world and put into superstores, there is no reason why bigger countries with money can't work within themsevles to solve hunger and famine in struggling places. There should be more organizations working to feed the hungry locally, nationally, and worldwide.

Exactly, superstores only sell food that looks pretty and that has a good appearance.
Then they throw away the food that has bruises and weird appearance, and then that food goes to waste. if we can convince large supermarkets to donate this extra food to the homeless and the hungry it could help a lot.

Stores need to focus on selling all their food instead of picking food that they think will appeal to the higher classes. Such as regular apples compared to deformed looking apples they both hold the same taste, nutrients, and nourishment. But instead of keeping them they throw them away. We need to give the food we don't want to homeless shelters. So that we aren't wasting.

I agree BOD2N5
With all of this food grade, cosmetic standards and the stereotypical produce appeal its hard for grocery stores to sell "ugly" produce. Organizations like NOLA food CO-OP make it their mission to sell this ugly fruit and vegetables. The food waste is the number 3 reason for all the carbon in our atmosphere. converting this waste into food for the needy or world hunger we can greatly reduce our methane and carbon emissions.
