What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!
Food & Hunger >
Conserve
I learned that it is very important to re-use and conserve food. Most people just eat a lot of food or open a lot but don't eat all of it. Also, people don't realize how much resources and water it takes to make beef and other livestock into food. It takes many gallons of water just to make a pound of beef, so people need to make better choices
I completely agree. I too tend to not reuse food but instead buy new food whenever I am hungry. So many resources are used to make food. For example, it takes 1.1 gallons of water to grow one almond. We need to conserve our food and in that way, we can save our environment too.
I totally agree because it's not good to waste food, my sisters, and friends are always wasting food and I always tells them not to, mainly because it's wasteful and why have something to eat if your just gonna eat a portion of it and throw the rest away? when they can just compost it instead of completely throwing it away. Sometimes I waste food but I also recycle a lot at home, and i always eat all my food most of the time and if I don't, i sometimes save it for when I am hungry later. or ask anyone if they want the rest of it.
I agree because we have access to food that is healthy but it can get wasted a lot. I have been learning about food waste at schools. It is a major problem because most schools don't even compost or donate food that is unused by students. Schools should partner with groups to get uneaten food to those who need it.
Thank of you guys for agreeing, it makes sense. In 2010 there was a study conducted by USDA and there were shocking results. It turned out there were 133bn pounds of food waste, which is around 161 bn dollars of food. This statistic shows just how much food is wasted and how much we are overproducing and how much we are wasting precious recourses.
