Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

After going through my carbon research footprint, I have noticed that carbohydrates, heavy meats, and dairy have a negative effect on carbon dioxide emissions. To make these things, it takes a lot of work and energy. Dairy has to go through many processes and factories to be produced. These factories are producing excess carbon dioxide that is let into the air. Meats don't require as long of a process, however, it's a food that takes a lot to break down. Meats nor dairy can be composted, an efficient way to dispose of excess waste. Carbohydrates also increase the carbon dioxide production that we produce. Choosing a more vegetarian or even a vegan lifestyle is much better for your body and the environment. Vegetables are also compostable which is also great for the environment.
