Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Eat More of Your Own Meat

Eat local meat. Eating local meat doesn't show the demand for it to big processors and farms. Eating local meat would cut back on CO2 required for your needs. Factory processing wouldn't be necessary because of the little amount of meat produced and it wouldn't need to be shipped around your state/country by car.

I agree that eating local meat is good and you bring up a good point on how eating local meat would cut back on carbon dioxide require for our needs.  Overall, it doesn't just have to be meat  eating locally made fruits and vegetables are also good for the same reasons.  Also, you bring up a good point on how there would need to be no factory processing because the meats, fruits and vegetables would be organic.  Having the food shipped around our state or country releases emissions such as carbon monoxide in our atmosphere too.

I agree. It is also healthier due to it not having as many preservatives. This is due to the fact that the foods do not have to travel as far of a distance or for as long of a time. Therefore the better choice would usually to go for the local foods. Sometimes it isnt accessible for people. It does come at a higher cost because it perishes easily and takes more time to grow because the lack of steroids pumped into the meat or vegetable.
