Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

We need to solve the food equation

If we as a human race could find a way to balance our local food consumption, with our consumption of foods that are from far away, we can help reduce the number of trucks that have to deliver the food to our local stores.

I agree. i think that food is a massive cause for carbon emissions and it is often overlooked. Food is also something that might be easier for a lot of people to make a change about. It's definitely easier to make a change in your food than it is to make a change in some other parts of your life.

I agree as well. Being mindful about meat consumption would help. Taking only as much food as you will eat helps too. I don't think our society would become vegetarian willingly, but maybe start with having a few vegetarian meals a week. Even though food does not affect your carbon footprint as significantly as transportation or home, every little thing still counts.

I feel that the big part of getting foods that we love is transportation, and because we have foods that are imported from other parts of the country or world, I agree with your statement if that we limit our diet to local foods, we can greatly decrease the CO2 levels we cause by demanding foods that are far away.
