Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Animal Agriculture Causes World Hunger

oliviahoffmanpaul

80% of agricultural land is used to grow food for and raise animals. 70% of grain and fresh water in the US is used to feed animals instead of people. If people stopped eating animal products there would be hardly any starvation in the world because the food given to animals would be used to feed people. Secondly, one acre of land produces 250 pounds of beef but 50,000 pounds of tomatoes and 53,000 pounds of potatoes. By giving up land previously used by animals humans would have a surplus of food and resources because it takes less to farm plants. This would solve world hunger and reduce the amount of land used by humans making our environmental impact much less.
