Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Wasteful to Mindful Eating

izzy_kinney

In today’s world, many people do not think about the impacts their food has on our planet. From what you’re eating, to how it got to your plate, to how much you eat, it all has an impact.
To start, when planning meals, it is important to think about what you’re eating and where it came from. Buying locally grown food that has not been processed or packaged has a positive impact as it reduces carbon use from trucks, planes, or other sources of transportation, reduces plastic use, and is often healthier for our bodies.
Waste is also a big issue as many people don’t realize how much they are throwing out. When planning meals, planning proportion sizes are just as important and planning where your food comes from. On average, anywhere from a quarter to a half of a person’s food get’s thrown out every night. To stop this, start with only taking what you think you will eat, as you can always go back to get more. Also, start a composting pile for a place to put leftovers if you do end up not eating them or keep leftovers to eat in the future.
All these aspects have hu ge impacts on our planet and if we can start thinking more mindfully with our food, we can help to change negative habits.

I agree with your ideas! It is also important to know just what your are eating in general as well, whether or not it is locally grown. For example, eating beef will increase the worldwide carbon footprint as a cow releases 70 to 120 kgs of methane annually (keep in mind, the effect of methane in the atmosphere is 23 times the effect of CO2 in the atmosphere), regardless of whether or not it is locally bred.

I agree, the fact that we waste so much food is disturbing, not only because of the fact that it uses so much carbon in the factories to make processed foods, which most of us eat, which thinking about it is disgusting in it self, but the way of transportation that it takes to get to us also uses carbon, but the worst part is the world actually has enough food to feed everyone several times, but their are still so many people going hungry. If people would stop being greedy and ungrateful for the food that they have, and instead buy locally to save the use of carbon, but also to realize that the food they are wasting could of saved someone’s life and stop taking what they have for granted.

I agree. Buying locally and having a more diverse diet reduces carbon emissions from the food that we eat, especially reducing the consumption of beef and dairy. Suppressing the consumption of these foods reduces the carbon your body emits after consuming them. Furthermore, it is also better to buy locally as carbon emissions from transport such as trucks are reduced.
