Currently in my home we have a few things that contribute to reducing environmental impact. We have solar panels that contribute to heating our pool, use LED lightbulbs and low flow toilets, and recycle and compost as much as we can. Additionally, if I had my own home, I would make a few changes. I would want to increase the number and scope of my solar panels so that they would power not only the pool heater, but more of the actual house as well. I would change my appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, to energy and water efficient models. I would take away the grass in my front yard, in order to conserve water. I would have rain chains that would gather water that could be used for watering plants. I would put a pool cover on my pool to prevent evaporation which wastes water. In APES last year we read about eco-friendly housing designs in our textbook. I would want to implement some of the ideas. For example, one idea the book mentioned was to have angled windows and eaves that would allow for maximum sunlight to filter into the house but also provide sh ade at certain parts of the day. Consequently, I wouldn't have to use as much heating or air-conditioning. Another thing I would want to have in my home is a garden for growing food. This would eliminate the ordeal of transporting food and can also be much more healthy and sustainable.
