MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Ideal Household Footprint

After configuring my carbon footprint, I realized my family of three does not use as much carbon as I had first predicted. This is because we have low pressure shower heads, raise chickens for eggs and always turn off lights and unplug electronics as frequently as possible. However, this does not mean my current home is entirely "eco-friendly".
If I had the chance to construct an ideal home which emits little carbon, I would first find a location, towards higher grounds, that would generate plenty of sunlight to harvest energy through the use of solar panels. Second, low power flushing to limit the use of water in each flush to conserve water. In addition, install a composting system for compostable waste, such as food scraps to be recycled into the ground. Finally, in my ideal environmentally friendly home, a garden with seasonal vegetables and berries, to save a trip down to the grocery store.
