MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My family´s footprint is about the same average as any other family in Iceland. We recycle our trash, we have one blue trash bin where we put all of our paper and other black trash bin for the rest. We also recycle bottles and cans. We try to turn always off the lights in all  the rooms when we aren’t using them, and on day we don’t turn on the lights if we don’t need them. We also try to not leave the water on when we brush our teeth an when we are in the shower we turn the water off wen we put shampoo and conditioner in our hair.

I have noticed the same thing, that my family was average to other American families. We have our trash, and our recycle. W have a compost bin under our sink that we through the remnants of our food products in. When that gets full we through it into our green can which has our grass and our raked leaves.
We have a hot tub in our backyard, but since last year around march, we have drained it and turned it off. My mom showed me what our electricity bill looked like and while the hot tub was still running, there was a giant peak, but as soon as we turned it off, it dropped drastically.
We never leave the water running while we brush out teeth, and before we take a shower, we place a bucket under the opening where the water comes out, and collect the cold water in it. When were done with our shower we go outside and water the plants with the water from the shower.
