MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

An Environmentally-Friendly Dream Home

My family's home footprint was well above average. Honestly, this was a good -however shocking- development. Knowing that the energy my house uses up is 26,193.121 pounds has really made me aware that my family needs to take some steps in reducing our home footprint.

If I had my own home, I would start with LED light bulbs. Though these are not a mentioned factor in this calculator, I believe that they would make a significant dent in my footprint. Although it is not best for the environment, I would continue to fuel heat energy in my home with electricity. I know that there are other more sustainable options, but this is one thing that is "off the table" for me to change. I would most likely continue getting energy from burned fossil fuels because that is what I know. This is another thing that is "off the table" for me. I would love to have a low-pollutant producing car and live close to my school or work to help reduce my transportation footprint too. In my b ackyard I would enjoy having a garden and make a lot of my food from organic fruits and vegetables that were grown right outside my doors!
