MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Ideal Household

My family, like every other family in America, does not have a completely clean carbon footprint. Although we make our best efforts to be conscious of environmental factors every day, there is also a significant amount of room for improvement in this area. I appreciate my own family's attempt to maintain an awareness for the environment, but the reality is, there are flaws in the way we conduct our behavior in terms of environmental sustainability. It is for this reason that I have created the ideal, environmentally conscious theoretical house model. First of all, this home employs solar power to remain energy efficient. This is our main source of energy. In addition, the number of lighting fixtures are cut down substantially to the bare minimum of what we need to function with when there is no natural light present. In addition to lighting fixtures, other electronic appliances are turned off when they are not being used to maintain energy integrity.  My family's diet will change to resemble the one I possess now: we will not eat meat and the only food we consume will be  locally made or organic. Furthermore, this house will be built in a location central to all of the work and school institutions of my family, to reduce the amount of individual traveling and environmental harm. We will take public transportation when the opportunity is presented, but when we do have to drive, the cars we own will be low carbon or hybrid vehicles that are more environmentally conscious than other models of vehicles. The thermostat of the home will be rarely used due to the fact that the house has insulation built into the structure of the walls, keeping it warm during cold days without any drastic harm to the world around us. A strict recycling, composting, and landfill system will be enforced, as well as the fact that we will plant trees in our backyard to absorb the carbon dioxide from the air and produce more, much-needed, oxygen. All of these factors contribute to my personal ideal of an environmentally sustainable house.
