MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My family's ideas

In my family, our consumption of carbon is well below the average. I can say we are already quite eco-friendly, BUT we can be more!

For exemple, become vegetarian or just eat less meats will be a really good idea, like using CFL (compact fluorescent light bulbs) instead of our old light bulbs, or why not using dual flush toilets! Also, an idea that we don't always think, unplug our appliances (as our laptop, phone) when it's fully charged. At my house, if we just reduce a little bit our meat consumption and our electricity consumption for our appliances, it will be a really good reduction of carbon footprint. If I had my own home, some of my electricity would come from solar energy I think.

All these little things can reduce our carbon footprint. It means these little things can change our world.
(and don't forget to turn off the light when you leave a room!!)

That is really good. Keep doing those things and your carbon footprint will stay very low!

I love that you're caring for the environment!! Keep doing those things and encourage others, even the smallest changes add up to make a big difference!

Hey Eléa,
My name is Deborah and I think its really good that your average is really low  compared to mine which was above the average for my region and reducing as mush as you can possible would greatly help the environment!!

Hi Eléa,
I also had results below average. I really liked how you made your post focus on what else you can do to reduce your footprint. You have some really great ideas on what else you can do. Great job!

I agree with eating less meats because this will definitely decrease your carbon footprint and there are very simple things people can do to decrease their carbon footprint like change their lightbulbs to more eco friendly ones like you have mentioned. I love how you are so eco friendly. Keep it up!

I think it’s really great that you’re aware of different ways to reduce your carbon footprint and care for the environment. Unfortunately, I’m guilty of some of the things that you advise against, such as neglecting to unplugging chargers when they’re finished doing their job and not using CFL lightbulbs. In the future, I’ll try and make an effort to curb these bad habits in order to reduce my negative impact on the environment.

Thinking about ways to help the environment is a great thing. My family and I hunt and fish for our food. But we never unplug our chargers. We recycle and we plan on making a compost pile soon.

I agree that eating less meat would be a good thing. I love steak. Its my favorite food, but I'm sure I could change how often and how much I eat. I should alter my diet to be more eco-friendly.

I agree, doing the little things like unplugging a charger when your not using it or using CFLs can add up and make a huge difference. My family has a problem with over using power. And we plan to cut down on power by cutting off the T.V. s and computer when we do not use them. My family has also gotten into recycling and reusing more.

More people should be looking at this website! Many people don't care to even know their carbon footprint! Especially in the US where many people waste so much energy and resources and we just throw it all away. Eating less meat would help not only our bodies, but also it reduces the amount of animals that suffer in slaughterhouses! I am personally a meat eater, but I would like to become more eco friendly especially after knowing what my carbon footprint is.

We can all do our share of saving electricity and recycling. I think that you are on to a great start. Keep up the good work.

Doing very little things can always make a difference. I think that if each household were to plug off their laptops, tablets, desktops, lights, etc whenever they're not being used, it can make a tremendous difference. Not only for the environment, but possibly even your wallet! So, in all honesty, it's a win-win situation. <3 I'm glad theres eco conscience people out there <3

Unlike your family, my carbon footprint is fairly high at about 16,000 kgs. That is really great that your family has already been finding ways such as turning off lights and eating less meat to cut down on your carbon footprint. I agree that it would be a good idea to have a solar powered home and I think I might do that myself in the future. The changes we make can have a huge impact so just keep doing what you're doing!
