MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Reducing MY Family's Carbon Footprint

katyasusa

My carbon footprint is abnormally high, but most of it is based on transportation. To get to the places I have to go, I honestly cannot ride a bike to. Most of my friends live 20-30 minutes away in different areas all over my city. There is no way you could ask me to ride my bike or walk to their houses when half the time I have to take the freeway to get there.  However, to my friends that live close by I do walk to their houses 80% of the time because they only live, at most, a mile away which is not very far and very doable. Walking to my friends that live close by is one way I try to reduce my carbon footprint and another thing I do is I carpool to school with 2 other people. The people that I carpool with live down the street from me so we all live 9.9 miles from our school. By carpooling we reduce three times as much energy as we would use going in 3 separate cars. There really is no way for me personally to reduce the transportation  part of my carbon footprint there are other ways to reduce the other parts of it. For example, I have started to not use the lights  in my room, unless absolutely necessary, instead, I open up all my blinds so that the sunlight lights my room rather then actual light bulbs. Other members of my household have started doing this too. Before, I used to always have my light turned on but now I am saving electricity and reducing the electricity bill as well! Another thing I have started to do recently is take 5 minute showers versus my 35 minutes showers. Now when I get in the shower I wash my hair and my body and then get out. This is saving a ton of water that can be used for other things and the water bill as well!

Hi! My name is Alisyn and I live in North Carolina. I completely get where you are coming from about the transportation aspect. Mine was the highest out of my four categories, but there isn't much I can change about it. I have begun carpooling with friends, but even that only reduces the footprint so much. Many of my friends live quite a distance away therefore, I can not walk to their house unless I want to be walking for an hour+. I also try to take very quick showers, only staying in for what I need to, and not just standing under the water thinking about life.

I have the same problem. Is it possible for y'all to use the public transportation system? Public transportation is the epitome of carpooling. I have found is that not very many people take advantage of it who have cars. Imagine how much of a difference it would make if we all used the system to its fullest.

I live in the central of my city and the population is incredible high, especially in the rush hour. So mostly i would choose public transportation rather than auto, because it is scarcely able to move if you take a cab or your family auto. And even it might be crowded in the carriage, public traffic can tremendous save the mine and petrol, It is not merely to reduce footprint, but also save your money.
