MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Using plastic or a tarp to cover windows/screens in extreme temperatures

BenGladis

Every year, late fall until early spring, my family puts plastic wrap on the inside of our windows in the house. We also put a tarp around our screened in back porch. We do this so we don't have to use the heating system in our house as much. We don't always get extremely cold temperatures in the winter but it is very helpful. It was helpful during the bad winter storm in January that we had here in the North East United States. We had about 30 inches of snow locally and the tarp on the back porch and the plastic on the windows did what it could to prevent our house from being even colder. Thoughts? Does anyone else use any methods like this? How about summer methods so we don't have to use the air conditioning as much? It is sometimes really humid in our area during the summer months.
