MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Buckets in the Shower

alex9240

My family is always trying to cut down on home much water we use. Recently we have been putting a five gallon Home Depot in the shower to catch all the cold and unused water. This helps save a ton of water as we use it for our lawn. This will help you conserve water and also keep your front or back lawn nice and healthy.

uh, you misspelled how... Do you mean a Home Depot Bucket cuz you only said home depot?

My family does the same thing, we put a bucket in our shower that collects water that would otherwise go down the drain, we then take this water and use it to water plants. During the drought this is a great idea of how to get water for plants, if everyone did this we would have far less wasted water and people would not have to turn on the Sprinklers nearly as much.

That is actually a very good idea!  I have heard from many people that turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth is a great way to reduce water use in your home, and I do this every time I brush.  Shower buckets, however, seem much less common, yet more effective.  They would conserve even more water than turning off the sink while brushing, and the water collected could go toward other things that would have used even more water.

That is a really good way to conserve water, and I never thought about doing that! My bathtub drain was clogged resently and when I took a shower I noticed all of the water pilling up on the bathtub floor and when I was done the water was to my ankles. Now I have a great  solution!
