Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

the environments dream home
If I were to make my own perfect home for the environment, I would definitely start with solar panels. Solar panels would make it so that I can produce my own energy and not waste any. I wish my house was closer to school and my parents work but it’s already smack in the middle of those two places, so there is really no way to move it to make it more sustainable to commute. I would also install a personal well in my home, it would free me from using the resources that are being drained throughout California and it would be much cheaper. The only problem is that in the city of Oakland California it’s nearly impossible to get a permit to drill a well, most believe this is because the water company has political capital and keeps it from happening. In order for any of our sustainable houses to work there has to be support from not only the greater community but also lawmakers.
I really like your post Hunter! It brought me great insight on my future house and reminded me how solar panels are such a great proponent to creating a more sustainable Earth. My hope is for a future society where any city will be in favor because of its clean environment allowing for diverse populations within each city and a greater spread of knowledge and consistency with how to keep our communities sustainable.
